The rules of Life are based upon principles that can help people succeed in all aspects of life.

Here are 50 powerful rules that take you out of your comfort zone and set you on a new path to happiness.

1. Change Yourself, Don’t Wait for the World to Change

This rule focuses on the cognitive fallacy of expecting others to change so that your life will be better. This rule also discusses the idea that happy people focus on changing themselves rather than blaming others. It encourages the listener to do the same.

2. Create your opportunities

This rule tells us that success doesn’t just come and find us– we have to go out and get it.

3. Make One Life Better Today

This rule says that making one life better does not have to be difficult.
It can be as simple as smiling at someone or genuinely thanking someone. Let someone know they did a good job when they help you. Be generous with your time or money. Encourage Someone. Support someone. Listen to someone. Save a soul. Help the needy. Visit the sick. There are probably as many ways to make one’s life better today.

4. Never break your promises.

These rules say you should keep every promise; it makes you credible.

5. Lift People, Don’t Put Them Down

There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people. “Strong people don’t put others down. They lift them.” ~ Michael P. Watson

6. You are never as stuck as you think you are.

SEE: Try doing that thing you feel you can’t do – Adaeze UC

“It is the way we react to circumstances that determine our feelings.” ~Dale Carnegie

You feel like you’re drowning in mud.

You feel stuck, sad, worthless, and confused.

You want to move. You want to win like others. You want to be congratulated.

And then it evolves into the feeling of anxiety, fear, and confusion.

Success is not final, and failure isn’t fatal. You are never as stuck as you think you are.

7. Persist, No Matter the Odds

This rule tells us what makes those who succeed different from those who failed. It is not failure that prevents success but the refusal to continue to try when the failure occurs. Those who quit after a failed attempt are not likely to succeed. Those who keep trying no matter how many painful rejections or frustrating failures they experience are more likely to achieve their goals.

8. Happiness is a choice.

When you realize that happiness is a choice and it’s up to you to intentionally choose it every single day.

Happy people are not held hostage by their circumstances and they do not seek happiness in people or possessions.

It’s said that “for every minute you are angry, you lose 60 seconds of your happiness”.

9. You are not that important. But you are valuable.

This rule says that when we focus too much on our importance, but not enough on our value, problems are often created. Such problems include social anxiety, the stress of over-responsibility, worry, and conflict with others. The difference between importance and value is the focus. When we are concerned about others’ focus on us, we create a false sense of importance.

Some people are stressed by the demands they perceive from others.

10. Don’t seek happiness–create it.

You don’t need life to go your way to be happy.

Learn how to stop worrying about things you cannot control so you can create your happiness.

11. Don’t Compare Your Insides to Others’ Outsides.

SEE: The Best Ways To Build Generational Wealth

People who have low self-esteem base their opinion of themselves on what they observe of other people:

“She seems to be better than me.”

“He has it all together. Why can’t I be like him? Does he have two heads?”

” She is so blessed. I’m not lucky at anything.”

“Their relationship is perfect. I bet he loves and adores her so much more than my partner.”

“Why can’t I be like them?”

Such a comparison is not a fair way of evaluating yourself. You know everything about yourself. You know every thought and every behavior, every attempt and every failure, every self-doubt, and every hurt. You don’t know all that about someone else. You only know what they choose to show you. As you develop a closer relationship you may be privy to more but you still don’t know everything. Therefore, comparing yourself to what others allow you to see is not a fair comparison.

Don’t treat yourself unfairly. Don’t compare your insides to others’ outsides.

12. Sometimes, Ask for help.

Don’t let your fear of being judged stop you from asking for help when you need it. Sometimes asking for help is the bravest move you can make. You don’t have to go it alone.

13. Time is Precious – Choose How You Use It

Instead of ignoring time and pretending like you have all the time in the world, you need to think of time as a limited commodity like money and budget it. You can’t borrow time. You only get what you have.

14. Always replace every negative thought with a positive one.

Negative thinking can contribute to problems such as social anxiety, depression, stress, and low self-esteem. Always replace every negative thought with a positive one.
A positive mind is stronger than a negative thought.

15. Always Accept what is, let go of what was, have faith in what will be.

Sometimes you have to let go to let new things come in. Accept what is—and keep going anyways.

16. Live In The Moment

Living in the present moment means no longer worrying about what happened in the past and not fearing what will happen in the future. It means enjoying what’s happening now and living for today.

The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.

For instance, take the practice of meditation for example. The very basics of meditation teach us to both encourage mindful thoughts and promote a focus on the present moment. Research on the practice of meditation has shown mindfulness helps to reduce stress, control anxiety, promote emotional health, and enhance awareness.

17. Be confident enough to motivate confidence in others

SEE: 15 Smart Money Habits

Self-confident people believe they have the qualities, skills, and intelligence to be successful even in the most challenging of situations.

Have self-confidence, trust in your abilities, and believe that you can do what you set your mind to achieve.
Show those around you that you also have confidence in them.

18. Always Admit your mistakes and don’t repeat them

When you make a mistake, there are only three things you should ever do about it: admit it, learn from it, and don’t repeat it.

“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” – Albert Einstein

“You make mistakes. Mistakes don’t make you.” – Maxwell Maltz

“The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” – Henry Ford

If you can’t admit your mistakes, you are destined to repeat them.

19. See The Good In Others

This rule says that as hard as it may be, it’s important to see the good in others. After all, we are all human beings at the end of the day. We aren’t perfect.

People who surround themselves with positivity have an easier time seeing the good in other people.

When we see mistakes in others, our mind becomes restless. When we see good in others, our mind becomes happy. Seeing the good in others is for our benefit.

20. Be kind to yourself and forgive yourself.

You can’t know what you haven’t yet learned, you can’t become proficient without first being a beginner and you can’t be perfect. Welcome to the human race.

People who surround themselves with positivity have an easier time seeing the good in other people.

Self-forgiveness can have several physical, mental, and relationship benefits, but it is not always easy. Learn how to forgive yourself.

Remember to be kind to yourself rather than ruminating or lashing yourself with guilt, practice self-compassion, which involves soothing.

21. Failures are lessons in progress.

It’s through failure that we learn the greatest lessons that life could teach us.

“It is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default.” — J.K. Rowling

Failure is always forgivable if you dare to learn its lessons and move forward in a new way.

22. Always Make amends with those who have wronged you.

This rule says that we should always apologize. It says that apologizing doesn’t always mean that you’re wrong and the other person is right. It just means that you value your relationships more than your ego.

23. Find joy In The Little Things

SEE: 60 Things You Should Know About Money

Finding happiness in little things can refresh your mind. It can also help you to release stress from your mind.

These are the little incidents that you see around you if you take the time to look around. Life is full of joy, we just have to take the time to appreciate it.

Finding joy in little things means being aware of the beautiful world around you and appreciating small joys and not waiting for one momentous thing to give you awakening.

24. Live your life on your terms

Define what your life is on your terms and achieve it by your own rules. Build a life you’re proud to live.

Life on your terms means the ability to live a life that is meaningful and fulfilling to you. It means being able to enjoy quality time with your family, while also having a purpose-filled career that provides financial freedom. It also means having the time, freedom and flexibility to pursue the things that matter most to you, whether that is travel, volunteering, fitness, or any number of other hobbies or interests.

25. When you don’t know, don’t speak as if you do.

Having to distinguish what you know and what you do not know or simply being aware of ignorance, is being the smart one or the one who knows. As there are rules to almost everything to attain order, the mastery of language also does. We cannot just freely state our thoughts even though we have our freedom of expression. We must know the limits to our thoughts. What may seem simple to you may mean many other things to the listener.

Chapter 56 – One Who Knows Does Not Speak

Those who know, don’t talk.
Those who talk, don’t know.

Shut your mouth.
Be still. Relax.
Let go of your worries.
Stay out of the spotlight.
Be at one with the world
and get right with Tao.

If you get right with Tao,
you won’t be worried
about praise or scorn,
about winning or losing,
about honor or disgrace.
That’s the way to be.

Speak when you have something to share, especially if you are sharing something that could make this world a better place. Listen when your heart has no agenda. You listen when your heart is pure. Because only when your heart is pure, you can listen and understand.” If you don’t know, simply don’t speak.

26. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

There’s a golden rule that goes something like, “Treat others how you want to be treated.”

How you treat others is how you invite them to treat you. Instead of judging people by their past, stand by them and help them.

Treat others how you want to be treated · Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Live by the Golden Rule. Always.

27. Think before you speak. Never say anything that doesn’t improve on silence

SEE: Top 10 Fully Funded Scholarships For International Students

Thinking before you speak is a really good habit to develop, to avoid causing trouble in your life.

Thinking before you speak is an important skill to master for all kinds of situations. It can improve your relationships with other people.

Why ‘think before you speak’? Because while most of us are pretty careless with the words we choose, words are just so powerful. They can be helpful or hurtful and can have a direct influence on the outcome of a situation, creating a positive or negative reaction in our world. Words define our identity and reveal our attitudes and sensitivities, reflecting who we are. Our choice of words gives listeners an indication of our intelligence or ignorance. And when continually reinforced and turned into habitually negative thought patterns, they have the power to create a bad habit of dwelling on the negatives in life.

28. Develop an attitude of gratitude

The simplest way to develop an attitude of gratitude is to choose to appreciate people or things in your life.

Develop the habit of saying “thank you” for everything others give or do for you. Send a simple appreciation card or gift as a token of appreciation.

Never let the things you want make you forget the things you have.

29. Life isn’t as serious as our minds make it out to be

Finding your inner self is more rewarding than arranging and carrying the circumstances of life. Life isn’t as serious as the mind makes it out to be. Life is too short to always be taken so seriously.

30. Take risks and be bold

SEE: Best Europe Scholarships 2022 | Fully Funded

Many are turned off by risks. It is easier and more comfortable to sit down in a safe spot and wait. But, this is what distinguishes the doers from the dreamers.

While the dreamers are still sleeping and waiting for the best moment to take action, the taker has caught the rewards. Risk-takers are more likely to be successful because they do not limit themselves and are willing to put in their energy when every other person is hesitant.

Take a chance! All life is a chance. The man who goes the furthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare.” – Dale Carnegie

People who take risks are bold. Somehow this courage is shown and endearing. With courage also comes confidence and alertness. When every other person withdraws, they are willing to stay in. This makes risk-takers leaders as they are anointed to be by themselves. Take risks and be bold. In the end, we regret only the chances we didn’t take.

31. Remember that “no” is a complete sentence

No is a complete sentence and so often we forget that.
When we don’t want to do something we can simply smile and say no.
We don’t have to explain ourselves, we can just say “No”.

That’s what you need to do when you don’t want to do something: say “No.” That’s no, period, end of the story. If you want to say, “No, thank you,” that is acceptable, but don’t add anything else to the sentence. Just remember that it is a complete sentence, and act accordingly. Learn to say no without having to explain yourself.

32. Build on your strengths

People do not always know their strengths. You’ve probably heard the old expression, “He doesn’t know his strength.” Drucker found that though most people think they know their strengths, they are almost invariably wrong. Yet building on strength is of great importance, Jack Welch demonstrated that.

Drucker said that there was only one way to identify your strengths. He called it “feedback analysis.” He said that in a short time you would be able to identify your strengths and even promised that you’d usually be surprised at the results.

Drucker’s advised methodology was simple. Whenever you take an important action or decision, write down the outcome that you expect first. When results are achieved, compare them with those you had expected. If expected and actual results are the same or close, this identifies strength and you should exploit it.

The struggle you’re in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.

33. Never doubt your instincts

Never underestimate the power of your instincts. So many times, we make decisions despite that feeling of doubt and uncertainty that just gnaws at your “gut”, only to find we should have gone with our instincts. Following your instinct can certainly direct you toward the best path.

Trust your hunches; they are usually based on facts filed away in your unconscious mind.

34. View your life with gentle hindsight

Setting specific goals and timelines is essential to overcoming barriers.

Stop beating yourself up about things from your past. Instead of asking yourself, What was I thinking? ask yourself, “What was I learning?” Be gentle with yourself in life.

35. This too shall pass

SEE: Businesses That Can Make You a Millionaire {E-book}

“This too shall pass” is a well-known adage that expresses the impermanence of both hardship and joy.

The essential purpose of the phrase, “this too shall pass,” is to provide hope; to bolster resolve, to bring comfort during difficult circumstances.

Just because today is terrible doesn’t mean tomorrow won’t be the best day of your life. You just have to get there.
